Who Are Lucia and Jason?

The first female protagonist in a mainline GTA game, and the man who appears to be her partner in crime — and in life.

The December 2023 trailer was always going to be historic. What nobody fully expected was how quickly the community would become obsessed with the two people at the center of it.

Lucia: A First for the Series

Lucia is the first female protagonist in a mainline Grand Theft Auto game. This alone would have been major news. But the trailers have revealed much more about her than just her gender.

She is shown as competent, charismatic, and ambitious. In the first trailer she delivers the now-iconic “American Dream” monologue with a mix of irony and genuine belief. In the second trailer we see her in prison, in high-speed chases, and in quiet, intimate moments with Jason.

Rockstar has not released her full backstory. What we can piece together suggests she grew up in Vice City, has a criminal record, and is deeply motivated by the desire for something more than the life she was handed.

Jason: More Than a Sidekick

Jason has received less spotlight than Lucia, but the second trailer made it clear he is not simply “the boyfriend.” He is shown participating in heists, navigating the criminal underworld, and struggling with the same questions of loyalty and ambition that Lucia faces.

Their relationship appears to be the emotional anchor of the story. This is new territory for GTA. Previous entries have had strong partnerships (think Michael and Trevor, or Claude and Catalina), but never has a romantic relationship been positioned so centrally in marketing and, presumably, the narrative itself.

The Power Couple Dynamic

One of the most interesting aspects of the trailers is how Rockstar has chosen to market the two characters together. They are shown as a unit — sometimes in sync, sometimes in tension, but always a team.

This raises fascinating questions about gameplay. Will players be able to switch between them at will? Will certain missions be locked to one character or the other? Will their relationship evolve based on player choices?

Rockstar has stayed silent on all of these mechanics. The trailers are carefully constructed to show the characters without revealing how they function in gameplay.

Why This Matters

For over two decades, Grand Theft Auto has been defined by male protagonists (with the notable exception of the PSP spin-offs). Lucia represents more than just “diversity.” She represents Rockstar’s willingness to evolve the fantasy at the core of the series.

The fact that they chose to center marketing around a romantic criminal partnership rather than a lone wolf or a trio of mismatched heist partners tells us something important about the kind of story they want to tell this time.

Key takeaway: Lucia and Jason are not just new characters. They represent a deliberate shift in how Rockstar wants players to experience the world of GTA — through the lens of a relationship that is both loving and deeply complicated.
